Explore the emerging opportunities and challenges surrounding artificial intelligence with this Hot Docs for Continuing Professional Education accredited screening and discussion for lawyers and business professionals. The program will feature the Hot Docs film More Human than Human as a case study. It will be followed by a panel discussion featuring leading experts and scholars who will provide an overview of current and upcoming AI technology innovation and will address growing impact of algorithms, automated decision-making, and other AI innovations on the work of legal and business professionals.


The overall objective of this program is to provide lawyers and business professionals with a better understanding of the fundamentals of artificial intelligence in a law or legal services practice, including considerations related to ethics, security of information, productivity and efficiency. The program learning objectives are as follow:

  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the importance of emerging AI-related technologies for the legal profession and for legal and business professionals;
  • Understand the practical meaning of AI and the key technical terms related to AI such as Algorithm (i.e. predictive analytics – use of data analytics to predict trends, behaviour patterns and outcomes), Expert system, Machine learning, Natural network and Deep learning;
  • Understand how AI affects legal professionals in their everyday work, and how AI is likely to change their profession;
  • Discuss what might be possible ethical, managerial, legal, regulatory benefits/opportunities and risks related to AI for legal professionals; and
  • Discuss how these benefits can be exploited and how risks can be avoided or mitigated.


This program is an accredited and/or is an eligible learning activity for the following professionals.

CHARTERED FINANCIAL ANALYSTS (CFA): This program qualifies for 2 hours of CE credits.

CHARTERED PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTANTS (CPA): This program qualifies as an accredited and/or eligible learning activity for Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA). LAWYERS (ONTARIO): This program contains 2 hours of Professionalism Content accredited by the Law Society of Ontario. This program may also be eligible towards CPD requirements for lawyers in other Canadian provinces.

More than just an exposé on the pros and cons of new technology, the filmmaker’s journey takes him to the world’s leading AI experts and robot pioneers confronting them with existential questions such as: will AI, infinitely smarter, interconnected and possibly self-aware, render humanity obsolete?
